BIOLOGY LECTURE 2 - THE LIVER

BIOLOGY LECTURE 2
TOPIC : THE LIVER.

HELLO everyone, Welcome to Biology class in our last topic we talked about The Diseases of the Kidney, the effects and remedies. Now in this second lecture, we would be looking into "THE LIVER" pls pay attention and carefully.

🔰 THE LIVER, The liver is a dark red organ located at the right side of the abdomen just below the diaphragm, it over lapse the stomach and have some other structures like gall bladder and duodenum linked together by the bile duct. We would be looking at The functions of the liver and diseases of the liver (effects and remedies). Let's begin ;

🔰 FUNCTIONS OF THE LIVER :
1. REGULATION OF BLOOD SUGAR : the liver is able to convert excess glucose to glycogen by the influence of a hormone called "INSULIN" and also to recovery glycogen to glucose by the influence of hormones, glycogen when it's level is low.

2. DETOXICATION : the liver is able to convert toxic substances such as drugs and alcohol into harmless substances which are later excreted out of the body.

3. PRODUCTION OF BILE : the livers synthesize bike which is stored by the gall bladder and transported to the duodenum through the be duct where it emulsifies fat and enhances it digestion and absorption.

4. PRODUCE OF ESSENTIAL PROTEIN : the liver produces proteins like fibrinogen and prothrombin and globules etc. This proteins play great role in the dotting of blood.

5. STORAGE OF VITAMINS : the liver have the ability to store vitamins A, B12 and D and also to produce vitamin A from carotene.

6. RESERVOIR OF BLOOD : the liver contains many capillaries with blood phases with large volume of blood.

7. STORAGE OF IRON : the liver stores iron obtained from the breakdown of red blood cells.

8. PRODUCTION OF HEAT : all activities of the liver helps to generate heat which is used to maintain body temperature.

9. Formation of Red Blood Cells in infants.

10. Regulation of lipids from drug and convert it to glucose and oxidises them to release energy during aerobic oxidation.

🔰  NOW WE MOVE TO THE DISEASES OF THE LIVER [ EFFECTS AND REMEDIES].

1. DIABETES MELLITUS : This is the inability of the liver to convert glucose to glycogen due to the failure of the pancreas to secrete insulin thus, the excess sugar is left in the blood and loss through urine.

➡️EFFECTS : Continuous Rehydration, Blurr vision, loss of weight and muscular weaknesses.
➡️REMEDIES : Avoid intake of carbohydrate foods, regular doses of insulin injection, use of drug like diabinese.

2. INFECTIVE HEPATITIS : another disease of the liver, its the inability of the liver to reconvert and store glycogen into glucose which is caused by the inflammation of the liver due to viral infections of the toxic substances.

➡️EFFECTS : severe headaches and nausea, loss of appetite, general weakness of the body, yellow eye and urine.
➡️REMEDIES : avoid alcoholic drinks, use of drugs, patient should have his/her special diet.

3. GALL STINES : this is another disease of the liver, its the formation of hard objects which block the passage of the bile which can lead to the obstructive jaundice due to the retention of bike pigmen of the blood.

➡️EFFECTS : yellowing of the skin and eye, inability to digest fat & oil properly.
➡️REMEDIES : surgical operation to remover the stones, administration of drugs, dissolving of stones by oral feeding on bile.

4. CANCER OF THE LIVER : Another disease of the liver, this is an uncontrollable swelling of the liver due to rapid division of the liver cell, patient may be treated by surgery if detected early or some other medical treatment like radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

5. CIRRHOSIS : This is a disease of the liver that tends to be serious in which damaged  liver cell are replaced by dead fibrous tissue, it may be caused by excessive drinking it alcohol for a long period of time or hepatitis.

➡️REMEDIES : of course the drinking of alcohol should be avoided, surgical operation or liver transplant.
