BUSINESS STUDIES - LECTURE 1.

TOPIC : THE INNATE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN OFFICE.

WHATS IS AN OFFICE? Generally, an office is a place where business is done or service is provided. An office can also be described as the type of business done or the nature of the service provided. I hope You guys are following. We have mainly two sizes of an office namely ; SMALL AND LARGE OFFICE (About this offices below 👇👇)
➡️SMALL OFFICE : A small office may be a little shop that sells a small number of goods cause the size of an office depends on the size of business organization to be carried out. The owner of a small office may probably have a just a desk with drawers or probably a filing cabinet, it's obvious that in a small office, the number of staff to be hired is Just from 1 to 3.. Now let's know the advantages and disadvantages of a small office.

Advantages of a small office ;
1. The owner of a small office would be very able to know, keep and give account of the day to day  running of the business.

2. The owner of a small office would also be able to keep a close relationship with his employees as there are only few of them.

3. The employees in a small office easily gain knowledge to start a similar business in the future if it becomes necessary to do so.

Disadvantages of a small office
1. There happen to be few office aid materials / machines like the photocopy, laminating machines so the employees may have to go to another office which will exhaust time and energy.This happens in some small offices in Nigeria.

2. Salary of an employee in a small office depends on what the owner is offering regardless of his/her employee's skills.

3. Lots of work of to be done In by an employee, this happens when only one person is employed to do all the work in a small office.

➡️LARGE OFFICE : This is the direct opposite to a small office, it requires large amount of spacing. Large offices includes Commercial Enterprises, Financial institutions like banks and trading organisations. We have many of this in the world now.
Now let's see the advantages and disadvantages of a large office below ;

 Advantages of a large office 
1. There is enough and varieties of office aids such photocopier, laminator and lots of computers, etc. With this tools, there's maximum efficiency of everyday work in the office. 

2. Salaries of employees are determined on both the salary scale impose by the boss and profit made by the business organization. 

3. Social facilities are allocated to every employee. Social facilities like free medical care, eateries,etc. 

4. The C. E. O or the board of directors that run the company employs lots of workers to keep the business running fast and smooth. 

 Disadvantages of Large Office
1. There is no close relationship between employees and the employer this is due to not usually involved with the actual day to day running of the business. 

2. There could be errors, fraud and incompleteness of records if each employee's work are not checked and reviewed constantly. 

3. Much creation of departments in a large office might limit work experience to a cemtain department. 

Having learnt the Meaning of an office, the types of offices, the advantages and disadvantages of the types of offices.. Let's now look at the functions of an office. 

FUNCTIONS OF AN OFFICE. 
1. Receiving information,
2. Processing information received, 
3. Recording the information processed, 
4. Communicating the information recorded.
